Here’s a helpful outline on how to study at MBKU.

BEFORE CLASS:

  1. Find the “big picture” – skim the information before lecture (identifying and memorizing the 4-5 major topics to stay on track)
    1. Before you start reading (repeat for each subsection):
      1. What is the organization (sequence of developments)?
      2. Think of what you already know about the subject
      3. Jot any questions you have next to the chapter heading
      4. Turn the heading into a question
    2. Read through the section once rapidly to get a general idea of what it’s about
    3. Circle any unknown words and clarify their meaning(s)
    4. Read the Intro and Summary
    5. Skim through lecture slides
    6. Write in the margins key phrases/concepts (# them)
  2. Should take NO MORE than 10-15 minutes per hour of lecture
  3. Scan the major headings/subheadings and take a few minutes to memorize those (don’t skip this!)
    1. Print the Objectives
    2. Insert them into your notes, so you can fill it out after class
  1. Look up any terms/words you’re unfamiliar with

DURING CLASS:

  1. Print the notes and/or take notes on your computer
  2. Really listen to the instructor during lecture and take good notes:
    1. Only things you don’t know
    2. Testable topics

AFTER CLASS:

  1. Take a little break – work out, go for a walk, do something non-school related
  2. Summarize each slide in 1-2 sentences in your notebook
  3. Keep your materials organized and on-topic:
    1. Use headings/subheadings from the lecture to stay organized:
      1. For a list or chart, don’t use more than 5 major headings (use charts from the book – don’t reinvent the wheel!)
      2. For a diagram, no more than 6 major sections (use subheadings)
      3. Multiple summaries/diagrams are better than one large one
      4. Actively memorize charts as you create them – frequently review
    2. ONLY write a summary – including any notes you took
    3. Circle specific definitions within the notes in a different color
    4. DO NOT WRITE WHAT’S ALREADY ON THE SLIDE
    5. Add page numbers – if something comes up again, tag it with the same number
    6. Use abbreviations and be consistent with them
    7. Active learning/thinking of the material:
      1. Is this important?
      2. How is this part organized?
      3. Where does this fit into the big picture?
      4. What is the precise definition of this term?
      5. Where have I seen this before?  Earlier lecture?
    8. Active Processing:
      1. Identify important information
      2. Organize the information (big picture)
      3. Memorize the information (frequent review)
      4. Apply the information via practice questions, quiz questions, clinical applications during the study process (NOT just before the exam)
      5. ONLY do necessary reading for information that was missed in lecture (use index in textbook)
      6. Memorizing:
        1. How many items/headings there are (in order)
        2. Memorize the items/headings themselves (use mnemonics)
        3. Memorize information associated with each item/heading
          1. Key word or short phrase
          2. Adding the full item (concepts/facts)
        4. After you think you memorized it
          1. Cover the original and write the material on blank paper
          2. Throw it away
          3. Any doubt in memorization – memorize again and write it out (DON’T look at the old thrown-away paper)
      7. FREQUENT REVIEW OF YOUR NOTES!!
        1. When an earlier topic/concept is mentioned, STOP and review it
        2. How many headings
        3. Key words
        4. Concepts/facts

OTHER TIPS:

  1. When reviewing for an exam, look at:
    1. Slides
    2. Summary/notes in notebook
  2. Supplies:
    1. 1 notebook per module
    2. 1 binder per module
  3. Most importantly:
    1. STAY ORGANIZED!
    2. Quiz yourself and your classmates

Save the picky (but necessary) details for the night before but memorize all the concepts and the first couple levels of detail as you go (review them as you study later material).
